Lovesexy was Prince first real world tour (not including the 1986 Hit 'N Run shows as part of the Parade Tour), with dates in
Europe (32 shows, 500,000 people), America (38 shows, 600,000 people) and
Japan (8 shows). The stage was circular, except for the outdoor shows where
a more conventional stage was set up. Initially the plan was to tour the
US first before going to Europe. Due to disappointing sales of the Lovesexy
album a last minute decision was made to go to Europe first. This led to
difficulties finding suitable venues, so they were forced to use some outdoor
arenas, which Prince wasn't too happy about.
On the US leg money was lost, but the Japanese leg made up for that. He would however not tour the US until the 1993 Act I Tour.
The final show of the European leg was filmed and broadcasted live, or with a little delay, throughout Europe. Later it was released on video and Laserdisc. The last two shows of the European leg took place in Dortmund, Germany. They were added after the show in Rome was cancelled. Most of the tickets for the last show were sold in Holland and the filming was done by a Dutch filming crew.
