Prince was asked to open om some shows for The Rolling Stones after Mick Jager saw him perform in March, 1981 at The Ritz in New York. After a 45-minute dress rehearsal on the 5th of October in Minneapolis, which was the debut of Brown Mark, Prince played his first of two opening gigs on the 9th of October at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. Other support acts on the bill were the J. Geils Band and George Thorogood.
Prince took the stage at 2:00 pm as the first act. The first two songs received polite applause, but after the third song crumbled up paper was thrown to the stage. After that more stuff was thrown and Prince and the band left after just 15 minutes. The promotor came on stage demanding the crwod to be quite but Prince never came back. Instead he took the first flight home to Minneapolis not wanting to play the second show. It took Steve Fargnoli and Dez Dickerson hours on the phone to convince him to come back.
The second show was even worse. Because people knew what happened two days before things were being thrown to the stage the moment Prince came on, ranging from oranges, tomatoes, to bottles and shoes. The could stand it for about 15 minutes before they finally left. The remainder of the opening shows were dropped, including some shows at the Silverdome in Detroit.
